affective and emotional architecture: // making an emotional place //

SMART TEXTILES are defined as textiles that can sense and react to environmental conditions or stimulus from mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical or magnetic sources. According to functional activities, smart textiles can be classified in three broad categories:
*passive smart textiles: are the first generations of smart textiles, which can only sense the environmental conditions or stimulus.
*active smart textiles: are the second generation of smart textiles, which has both actuators and sensors (shape memory, chameleonic, water-resistant, thermo regulated, vapour absorbing, heat evolving fabric and electrically heated suits and heat storage).
*ultra smart textiles: are the third generation of smart textiles, which can sense, react and adopt themselves to environmental conditions or stimulus. A very smart or intelligent textile essentially consists of a unit, which works like the brain, with cognition, reasoning and activating capacities.




Smart textiles or e-textiles or SFIT (smart textiles and intelligent fabrics) are configurated by mixing of textile fibers with technological fibers (sensor, condutive tissue…).

Therefore, in my view there is a concept´s difference between smart textiles wich their configuration is changed improving their funtions (clothes with control´s keys of mp3, iPod, mobile and headphones incorporated) that other “smart” fabrics that their configuration are the same but are implemented with devices (T-shirt that can measure the streght of batter´s blow in baseball). So, you can found both of them by separated or together.

Many smart/”smart” textiles have biomedical purposes because they can measure your body running (temperature, heart rate…)and send these anathomical data to a control´s unit in order to other people can make decissions without your real presence: pyjamas or t-shirt for babies or old people… t-shirt that when it gets hot by your body temperature, it gives off some smell or medical sustances (cosmetic clothes)…shoes that can measure your pressure of your steps to diagnose future back´s deformations.



All of these smart/”smart” fabrics are very interesting in the architectural´s applications: AFFECTIVE DOMOTIC (discipline wich purposes are make more humane environments wich can contain life. For that, it´s necessary that these environments are able to recognise, translate and process data about human emotions).





So, we need a software to translate human behaviours like gesturses, expressions… into a architectonic conditions of light, colour, sound, images, that is, into landscape´s conditions.
If our home or work place had SENSORS OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND BODY RUNNING, they could make decissions about our ENVIRONMENT´s LANDSPCAPE: they could change themselves colours, sounds, smells…or you can make them, you can change your covering as the same way that you choose your music in your iPod.





This concept is used in:
*UMINE PROJECTOR: a japanese device wich can project your landscape´s selection of its landscape´s and music catalogs and besides the fact that you can connect your iPod to listen your favorite music.



 
*MITSUBISHI EMIRAI CAR´s PROTOTYPE: this concept car has biometric sensors that measures body temperature, heart rare and face´s expressions for make itself appropiate decisions.
 
 
  CONCLUSION: ARCHITECTURAL PROPOSE
 
 


Therefore, we´ll living into an architecture that not only can interact with you translating our emotional behaviour in conditions of light, colour, smell,sound and image but this architecture can make us a life profile with a basedate of our life and make a life diagnosis and decisions or connect itself with medical units (hospitals…) and sending it regularly or daily to specialized people make decisions.

the emotions are quick and intuitive unconscious alterations of our mood as a result of ideas, thoughts or events, so that, are fast reactions as a result of a feeling or feelings (how we are feeling in this moment)

there are two types of human emotions: positive (peaceful-powerful-joyful) or negative (sad-mad-scared: these tend to cause negative alterations in our behavior like depression, anger, frustration, stress, anxious).

the emotional intelligence is the human capacity to pick up, control and change the emotional states for being able to express emotions and recognize them in other persons (feeling of empathy) and thus, develop social abilities, very important into the human life develop.

 

this capacity can present anomalies:

- can be uncompleted: disability to express themselves or recognize in others emotions, thus disability to feel empathy (autism)

- can be insufficient: disability to self-control emotions (psychosomatics illness)

- can be damaged: (dementia or alzheimer)

this capacity can be increase through cognitive development with cognitive therapies based in cognitive restructuration for restore the emotional balance by the development of conscious mechanisms to stop the negative thoughts that generate negative feelings, so that, we have to entertain our mind with another kind of thoughts.

 
 
 
 
 
so that, these therapies work with mental mechanisms (what do you do for feeling in that way) and:

- try to change them if they are erroneous and make you feel erroneous emotions

- try to include another to increase your emotional self-control

- try to restore them if they have been damage by age or another cause, or if they are nonexistent

 

it has been demonstrated that alternative therapies like cromotherapy, light therapy, picture therapy and psycho- aromatherapy are useful in emotional works as generate changes in human mood by colors, level lights, pictures and smells.

- restore their emotional balance in the same moment that they are having an emotional alteration, so that, this place helps them in the process of “the emotional self-control”
this alteration can be temporarily (specific incident) or continuous (psychosomatic illness: depressive neurosis, anxiety attack…), thus, this emotional place can be working just specific time or constant way
 
-  re-learn what is an emotion and how it can be shown though how they change their biometric parameters (facial gestures and thermography, heartbeat and tone of voice) before certain kind of colors, level lights, pictures, smells and sounds (autism, dementia, alzheimer)
 
 
so that, the objective is not only transform negative emotions into positive emotions but increase our mental mechanisms to do it quickly, giving physical parameters that change our surrounding and mood and we can learn using our senses how these parameters are “physical emotions”

this CPU send to cloud computing these data of physical outputs for being used by projector, so it is not necessary to have this unit at the same place that you are.

it has one purpose:
- to project the information that receive (five physical outputs) by two chances of action time:
(*) temporally: only when these emotional inputs have to be changed into positive emotional mood and it is necessary to make an emotional place.

this device has to be in an habitual place like working place or living place, so that, an emotional place is built simultaneous his user is present in it.

(*) your biometric translator device knows how you are feeling all the time.
 
these “emotional patterns” are downloading by CPU central processing unit all the time.
so, all the time this CPU:
(*) is transforms these emotional data or mood into “five physical parameters” (color/light/picture/smell/sound) and their levels or outputs.
(*) is uploading these outputs to cloud computing.
 
when you enter into a room with “emotional projection devices”:
(*) your biometric translator device synchronizes with them
and after that these emotional projection devices:
(*) can download your outputs or five physical parameters all the time and project them into this place, making your changeable emotional place all the time
 
if there are more than one user in the same room, all the emotional projection devices inside:
(*) are synchronizes with each one of users through their biometric translator devices.
(*) each one of user´s outputs are superimposed, making as a result only the common characteristics.
(*) these common characteristics of the five physical parameters of users are projected inside the room.

when we are listening music, we can choose in this moment what do we want to listen in order to how we are feeling…
 
when we have to wear, we can choose in this moment what do we want to wear in order to how we are feeling…
 
when we are working and it affects us making us to feel stress, we can change music, open the window, look throughout… and smell deeply, listen this intense sound and look your surrounding… pictures and colors… and feel better… and continue working
 
when we arrive at home after bad day, we can choose one of our favorite dishes, listen our favorite music, turn on our favorite lamp with that beautiful light… and smell deeply, listen this intense sound and look your surrounding… pictures and colors… and feel better… and continue living
 
architecture as a therapy, so that, parameters that define architecture (colors on surfaces, lights according to an indoor activity, views through the windows like pictures on wall,  smells and sounds that allow to remember our past in each spaces) have influence above human mood.
 
nowadays, it is not possible to change architectural shapes of all the places that we live (private or working or social or unknown) according to our emotional states or feelings in each moment but it is possible to change their illumination // chromatic // visual // olfactory //  audible characteristics through technology which works together with architecture for transforming human behaviors into architectural parameters.
 
an interactive architecture that reinforce our emotional intelligence and can adapt oneself to our changeable way of living and feeling.
 nowadays, architecture´s brick is software.
